Colin Powell
Colin Luther Powell (Colin Luther Powell, 1937년 4월 5일 – 2021년 10월 18일) was an American politician and military officer who served as a four-star general in the United States Army. He served as the 65th United States Secretary of State under President George W. Bush (2001–2005). He was the first African American to hold the position of Secretary of State. During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), Commander of the United States Army Forces Command (1989), and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War. He was the first and only African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Despite his claim that the Iraq War was launched because Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, he later admitted that the war was "a huge mistake." As a military man, he believes that war should always be a last resort. As a diplomat, he has rarely advocated military intervention as the first solution to international crises, instead prescribing negotiation and containment. Not all leaders have the grace and humility to admit when they have erred. Powell's openness and honesty placed him in a class of public servants who hold themselves accountable for their stewardship of public trust.
A Republican, he garnered attention in the 2008 US presidential election when he endorsed Democratic nominee Barack Obama.
He died on October 18, 2021, from complications of COVID-19 while undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.
