Denzel Washington's Graduation Speech (University of Pennsylvania, 2011): Embracing Failure

Denzel Washington

Denzel Washington (1954.12.28. ~ )
An American actor. His acting skills and intellectual image combined, making him one of America's national actors.

In 2002, he became the second African American actor in Academy history and the first in 38 years to win the Best Actor award. The presenter was his close friend, Julia Roberts, and the scene where she announced Denzel Washington as the winner and was deeply moved is famous. # Note that Denzel Washington previously won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 1990 Academy Awards.

Before Denzel Washington, numerous African American actors were active, but they were mostly limited to supporting roles, often as comedic relief or characters well-versed in the criminal underworld. Or, they frequently played roles that supported the protagonist with their expertise in the criminal world. Later, Morgan Freeman rose to leading roles, significantly improving the perception of African American characters. Then, Denzel Washington's global success further elevated the image of African American actors. Indeed, from the early 2000s when he reached the pinnacle of his career, Hollywood saw a marked decline in the stereotypical roles of African American actors as criminal experts and a gradual increase in their casting for intellectually demanding roles previously dominated by white actors. He is the epitome of an intellectual African American actor.

If I fail, I'll fall forward.
That way, at least
I'll know where I fell.
Baseball player Reggie Jackson struck out 2,600 times during his career.
The most strikeouts in baseball history.
But you've probably never heard about his strikeout record.
People only remember the home runs.
Thomas Edison failed 1,000 times in his experiments.
Because he invented the light bulb on his 1,001st try.
Fall forward.
Every failed experiment brings you one step closer to success.
You have to take risks.
At some point in your life, you're going to fail.
Accept it.
You will fail.
Accept it.
Because you can't avoid it.
When I first started acting,
I auditioned for a Broadway musical.
I thought it was the perfect role for me.
But I didn't get the job.
But this is what's important.
I didn't give up.
I didn't fall backward.
As soon as I left there, I was preparing for the next audition.
Then the next audition.
And the next audition.
But I kept getting rejected.
Failed,
and failed again.
But it didn't matter.
There's a saying.
If you stand in line at the barbershop long enough,
they'll eventually cut your hair.
Your opportunity will come.
Mine did.
Do you have the guts to fail?
If you haven't failed, you haven't tried.
My wife said this great phrase.
If you want to have what you've never had, you have to do what you've never done.
