Derek, who had been a musician since 1987, created the CDBaby.com website in 1997 to sell music. Since then, his friends have reportedly asked him to sell their music through CDBaby.com. CDBaby.com soon gained 150,000 musician users and became the world's largest independent music market, generating KRW 120 billion in music sales. He reportedly sold CDBaby.com for KRW 26 billion in 2008. Derek Sivers's 2010 TED Talk, 'How to Start a Movement,' has garnered 8 million views on the TED website.
